It is our house facial and the service booked most often at a studio that has been in Midtown since 2011. We see one client at a time, which leaves the extraction step all the time it needs.

What is a deep pore cleansing facial?

A deep pore facial is a facial built around manual extraction, and in our 60-minute session every other step is there to prepare the skin for it or to care for the skin afterward. You will also see it called a deep cleansing facial, a pore cleansing facial or simply deep facial cleansing; on our menu it is the European Facial.

Extraction clears the plug inside the pore. Your sebaceous glands make sebum, the oil that keeps skin lubricated and helps defend it, and they release it into the hair follicle. When that oil packs together with dead skin cells, it forms a plug called a comedo. A comedo that opens at the surface darkens into a blackhead; one that stays closed sits under the skin as a small bump.

Manual extraction sets this facial apart from the lighter ones on our menu and makes it the most complete of our hands-on treatments. It suits nearly every skin type, and the first session teaches us how your skin behaves.

What happens during our deep pore cleansing facial, step by step

The European Facial runs 60 minutes and follows 7 steps after the skin analysis: double cleanse, exfoliation, steam, extractions, massage, a targeted mask with serums, and a finish of moisturizer and SPF.

Three steps prepare the skin. A double cleanse lifts makeup and sunscreen, so we work on bare skin. Exfoliation comes next, enzymatic or mechanical, and we pick one after looking at your skin that day. Then steam softens the pores before the first extraction. Extractions open the second half; they take technique and time, and we don't hurry them, because hurried extractions leave marks. A lymphatic drainage massage over the face, neck and shoulders follows, then a targeted mask and serums matched to what the analysis showed. Moisturizer and SPF go on last, and before you leave we give you a home-care recommendation for your skin.

Do deep pore extractions hurt?

Extractions feel like brief pressure or a pinch, strongest around the nose, and they only begin after 3 preparation steps that end with steam.

Our extractions are manual and thorough, on skin the steam has already softened. If anything feels sharp, tell us at any point and we adjust the pressure.

What should not happen

Pressure and a brief pinch are expected. The following are not:

• Sharp pain that continues after you've asked us to ease off
• An inflamed, painful bump being squeezed open
• Redness that is still building hours later

Why squeezing blackheads at home leaves marks

Squeezing at the bathroom mirror skips all 3 preparation steps, so the plug resists and your fingers push harder on skin that wasn't ready. That pressure inflames the skin around the pore. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is the dark mark skin can leave wherever it was inflamed or injured. On deeper skin tones it shows up more often and darker, and it can stay for months or even years. Leave blackheads for your next appointment, and don't touch inflamed spots in between. For dark marks that old breakouts have already left, we use a chemical peel for post-acne marks: 30 minutes, $150.

How a deep cleansing facial compares with our other facials

On our menu, the facial with manual extractions costs $150 for 60 minutes: $50 more than the 50-minute Express Facial, which skips extractions, and $40 less than 45 minutes of hydradermabrasion, which clears pores with suction.

The analysis on the day decides which row fits. For deeply congested pores, manual extractions clear them more thoroughly than hydradermabrasion. When do deep pore facial results show?

Results come in two stages: for most people, pores that look clearer and a brighter tone right after the first visit, then fewer breakouts and smoother texture around the 3rd or 4th visit when you come back every 4 to 6 weeks.

We space visits 4 to 6 weeks apart so the outer layer of your skin can renew once between appointments: keratinocytes, the cells that build that layer, have a turnover time of around 26 to 28 days. The first days after a deep cleansing facial

From the evening of your facial, the routine is a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and daytime sunscreen, with your fingers kept off the cleared pores.

You leave the studio with moisturizer and SPF already on, plus the home-care recommendation we made for your skin. A few small spots in the days after can be congestion that was already on its way up; leave them alone and they settle. If you use a retinoid or a strong acid at night, ask us before you leave when to restart it.

Is a deep pore facial right for your skin?

Extractions suit congested pores, blackheads, dullness and uneven texture. We start you on this facial if you have never had a professional one, or if your last one was more than 6 months ago, and it works as monthly upkeep for skin you simply want kept in good condition. If your skin flushes after manual extractions, hydradermabrasion suits it better.

Active, inflamed breakouts change the plan. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the hair follicle and its oil gland. It starts with the same comedo that extractions clear, and it also shows up as papules, pustules or nodules, where pressure is the wrong tool. For red, swollen breakouts, the acne facial for active breakouts takes over. If the breakouts are deep, painful cysts along the jaw, or nothing you've tried has worked, prescription treatment may be the answer, and we'll tell you so you can see a dermatologist.

If you take isotretinoin or another prescription medication for your skin, tell us when you book. The doctor who prescribed it decides when extractions or exfoliation are safe for you again. Tell us about any other prescription medication too, because some make extractions unsafe.

Deep pore facials in a New York summer

In a New York summer, the double cleanse at the start of your facial has a full day of sunscreen and sweat to lift, and before a summer wedding the facial goes 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the date so any purging settles.

The skin analysis at the start of each visit decides how we exfoliate and how much we extract, in a humid August the same as in a dry January. In July and August, wear sunscreen every day and take it off with a full cleanse every night.

Counting back 2 to 3 weeks from a wedding at the end of June puts your last European Facial in early to mid-June. Keep the final 48 hours before the ceremony for a hydrating or oxygen treatment, with no extractions and no peel. On weekdays the studio stays open until 7:30 pm, so a facial after work gives the pinkness the rest of the evening to fade.

Frequently asked questions

Do extractions make pores bigger?

Extractions are meant to empty the pore, not stretch it, so the steam comes first and nothing is forced. If the size of your pores bothers you more than what's inside them, microdermabrasion (30 minutes, $100) works on enlarged pores and rough texture.

Is a deep pore facial the same as a HydraFacial?

No. HydraFacial is the trademarked brand name of one hydradermabrasion device, which uses suction to pull debris from the pores while it infuses serum. Our European Facial clears the pores by hand after steam. Our hydradermabrasion uses professional equipment on the same principle as a HydraFacial, with an equivalent result, and it is gentler than manual extractions because suction replaces the pressure.

Do you offer a deep pore facial for men?

Yes, in two places. At West 38th Street, the Gentleman's Facial for beard-adjacent skin is 60 minutes and $150, with steam and thorough extractions plus attention to ingrown hairs along the jaw and neck. Our Midtown East location at 140 E 52nd St, 2nd floor, offers a Men Deep Pore Cleansing Facial; that location books only by phone or text, at (917) 402-5448. Skip the shave beforehand: a fresh shave leaves skin more sensitive to extractions.

Can I add dermaplaning or waxing to the same visit?

Yes. Dermaplaning in Midtown can be added to your European Facial to take off dead skin and peach fuzz, as long as you don't have active inflamed acne. Waxing can share the appointment too; tell us which areas when you book, and our notes on caring for freshly waxed skin cover the days after.

What should I do before my appointment?

Pause retinoids and strong acids 3 to 5 days before; if it's a prescription, check with your prescriber before pausing it. You can arrive with makeup on, since the first cleanse removes it.

Do you offer deep pore cleansing for the back?

Yes. The Back Cleaning Facial treats breakouts on the back and shoulders with a deep cleanse, extractions and exfoliation: 60 minutes for $160.
